BUILD

Build only what the evidence proves is missing

“We built it and nothing changed.” Most marketing teams have a story like that: a year of work, a lot of money, a big launch, and a few months later the results look about the same as before.

The technology was capable. The team was working hard. What went wrong had almost nothing to do with the software. The old platform was removed, a better one was put in, and nobody changed how the work gets done. Same team, same handoffs, same bottlenecks, now on a more expensive martech stack. The platform can do more. The organization around it can’t yet.

There’s a second trap. “Build” can mean two different projects. In one, your martech stack can’t do what your strategy needs, so you replace the core platforms. In the other, the stack works fine but can’t handle the volume your strategy calls for, so you add to what’s already there. From a distance the two projects look the same. The work is completely different.

BUILD keeps you out of both traps. First, make sure the evidence shows a platform that can’t do the job, not a problem your team could still fix. Then decide which of the two projects you’re taking on. Run it in stages and check the results at each one. As the new platforms go in, build the skills, processes, and data your team needs to run them. Skip that and you get a big launch and the same results as before.
